## Description (the employer's text)

Why this role matters

Every year, about a million students in partner schools use MasteryPrep to prepare for the ACT, SAT, and state exams that shape their next step. Their schools trust us with their rosters and performance data.

We're hiring a hands-on Engineering Team Lead to build that product with a small team, using AI agents for much of the implementation while keeping people accountable for every change. The salary range is $150,000 to $160,000, and the role is fully remote.

### The role

This is a player-coach role. You'll lead a small team of engineers, report to our CTO, and spend generating code with AI agents. You'll shape how the team plans and delivers, mentor engineers, and own the health of both the product and the process.

If you've been leading managers or a large engineering organization and want to stay at that level, this likely isn't the right fit. If you want to lead a small team while still shipping code yourself, read on.

### How we work

AI changes what engineers do, not whether they matter. Agents write many of our first drafts. Engineers define the work, run acceptance testing, and give the final approval on every commit and merge.

Automated tests are how we verify agent output, and nothing merges without them. People stay accountable for everything that ships. If you're ambitious about automation and uncompromising about verification, you'll like it here.

### Responsibilities

What you'll do

- Lead the team. Manage, mentor, and grow a small team of product engineers. Run planning and keep delivery predictable.
- Ship product. Design, build, and maintain features yourself, working alongside AI agents.
- Run the AI-native process. Decide how work is broken into tasks agents can carry out: kickoff prompts, acceptance criteria, UAT checkpoints, and completion reports. Refine it as you learn what works.
- Gate AI output with tests. Set the unit, integration, and acceptance testing standard that agent-written code must meet, and hold the team to it in review.
- Keep people in charge of what matters. Set clear human decision points, specifically around development plans and UAT, including PR approval and merge, commit sign-off, and user acceptance testing.
- Protect student data. Own privacy in how we build: access controls, data minimization, integration reviews, and the privacy commitments we make to districts.
- Own data and integrations. Steward our PostgreSQL architecture and the SIS rostering pipelines (OneRoster, Clever, ClassLink) that get the right students into the right classes with the right data.
- Set the quality bar. CI checks, review discipline, and security practices fit for a platform serving a million students a year.
- Measure and improve. Track where AI-assisted development helps and where it hurts. Cut process that slows the team down, and scale what makes it faster and safer.
### Skills

What you bring

- 7+ years of professional software engineering, including 2+ years leading engineers as a team lead or engineering manager while still writing production code.
- Production experience with React and TypeScript, plus solid back-end work in Node.js or similar.
- PostgreSQL depth: schema design, query performance, and migrations.
- Cloud experience on Google Cloud Platform (Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub, IAM). GCP is preferred; AWS or Azure experience transfers if you're ready to ramp up.
- Experience building software that handles sensitive or regulated data. Student data under FERPA or COPPA is ideal, and health, financial, or other regulated data counts too.
- A test-first discipline for AI-written code. You've shipped production code with AI coding agents, can tell us where they failed you and what you changed, and can explain how automated tests gate agent output before it merges.
- Clear written communication. In an AI-native process, task specs and prompts are engineering artifacts.
- Judgment, pragmatism, and steady ownership under ambiguity.
Nice to have

- Education technology experience, especially K-12 SIS or rostering integrations or LMS ecosystems.
- Experience building products used by minors, including COPPA and student data privacy practices.
- Experience building or evaluating LLM-powered features: prompt design, evals, and guardrails.
- Experience bringing structure to a small team that's growing.
### Benefits

- $150,000 - $160,000 salary range
- Employee benefits eligibility (health, disability, AD&D, life insurance).
- Matching 401k
- Paid time off
- Generous paid holidays
- Ability to work fully remote
- Company supplied device/laptop
Interviews are held on camera. We verify identity and employment history for all finalists before making an offer.
