Job Title: Locum Band 7 Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist – Voice

Banding: Band 7 (Highly Specialist)

Location: Hinchingbrooke Hospital

Start Date: ASAP

Salary: £28.00–£32.00 per hour

Working Hours: Tuesday and Wednesday, between 09:00 and 16:00 (full-time or part-time options available)

Contract Duration: 8 weeks (approximately 2 months)

Job Overview

We are currently seeking an experienced and highly motivated Band 7 Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist specialising in Voice to join a clinical team at Hinchingbrooke Hospital on a locum basis.

This is an excellent opportunity for a specialist therapist with expertise in voice disorders to contribute to the assessment and management of adult patients presenting with a range of voice difficulties. The successful candidate will be involved in a Joint Voice Clinic alongside an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Consultant, working collaboratively to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.

The role requires strong clinical knowledge of voice disorders, laryngeal pathology, vocal fold mechanics and voice rehabilitation. Depending on locum availability, a Band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist may also be considered to support the wider voice caseload, with ongoing attendance at the Joint Voice Clinic by the specialist Band 8a Speech and Language Therapist.

This is an immediate-start opportunity offering flexible full-time or part-time working arrangements over an initial eight-week booking.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Attend and actively participate in Joint Voice Clinics alongside an ENT Consultant.
  • Assess, diagnose and manage adults presenting with a range of organic and functional voice disorders.
  • Develop and deliver appropriate, evidence-based voice therapy and rehabilitation programmes tailored to individual patient needs.
  • Apply specialist knowledge of laryngeal pathology, vocal fold mechanics and voice rehabilitation techniques.
  • Work collaboratively with ENT consultants and wider multidisciplinary teams to support effective patient care.
  • Provide empathetic support and adapt communication approaches for patients experiencing significant communication difficulties, as well as their families and carers.
  • Manage and prioritise your clinical caseload independently, ensuring effective workload planning and organisation.
  • Maintain high standards of clinical practice, patient safety and service delivery.
  • Where appropriate, contribute to the wider adult speech and language therapy caseload, including acquired communication and swallowing disorders across inpatient and outpatient settings.

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • A recognised degree or equivalent qualification in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Clinical experience working with adults presenting with acquired communication and swallowing disorders across inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Specialist experience in the assessment and management of organic and functional voice disorders, ideally working alongside ENT medical teams.
  • Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic and treatment skills, supported by sound knowledge of laryngeal pathology, vocal fold mechanics and voice rehabilitation.
  • The ability to manage and prioritise your own clinical workload independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to provide compassionate support to patients with complex communication needs and their families.
  • A commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.

Desirable experience and qualifications include

  • Membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
  • Successful completion of postgraduate specialist courses in voice disorders and/or laryngeal palpation.
  • Experience using low-tech and high-tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems.
