Role overview

CarGurus is seeking a Cloud FinOps Engineer II to join the Cloud Enablement team and help establish FinOps as an engineering capability. This role will improve cloud cost visibility, attribution, governance, and optimization across Engineering.

You’ll play a critical role in improving the accuracy and coverage of CarGurus’ cloud cost attribution, expanding self-service cost visibility, and helping engineering teams make informed decisions about cloud and AI spend. You’ll build automation and platform capabilities that establish repeatable anomaly-triage and savings workflows, support unit-cost metrics, and reduce the manual effort required to understand and optimize cloud consumption.

What you'll do

  • Build and maintain cloud cost attribution, tagging, and allocation capabilities across AWS.
  • Implement and improve CloudZero integrations, dashboards, reports, and data quality checks.
  • Develop automation for cost anomaly detection, alerting, and investigation workflows.
  • Partner with Engineering, Product, Finance, and FinOps stakeholders to define useful unit-cost metrics.
  • Support showback and chargeback capabilities by improving ownership, service, team, and cost-center mappings.
  • Help establish FinOps checkpoints in the software development lifecycle.
  • Identify and automate cloud savings opportunities, including rightsizing, lifecycle management, Savings Plans, and Graviton adoption.
  • Contribute to AI cost governance, including Bedrock usage visibility, token or inference cost attribution, budgets, and model-cost controls.
  • Build self-service tools and documentation that allow engineering teams to answer cost questions independently.
  • Write reliable Python, Go, Bash, Terraform, or similar automation.
  • Participate in code reviews, incident response, operational support, and continuous improvement.
  • Communicate findings clearly and turn analysis into actionable engineering recommendations.

What you'll bring

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with AWS infrastructure, cloud cost management, or FinOps-related engineering in an enterprise environment. Experience may come from cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, or a dedicated FinOps role.
  • Experience supporting production workloads in AWS.
  • Working knowledge of Terraform and infrastructure automation.
  • Experience with Python, Go, Bash, or another scripting language.
  • Understanding of cloud cost concepts, including tagging, allocation, usage reporting, and anomaly detection.
  • Experience with CloudZero, AWS Cost Explorer, CUR, or similar FinOps tooling is preferred.
  • Ability to work with incomplete data and improve reporting accuracy over time.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A customer-focused approach to partnering with engineering and product teams.
  • Curiosity about AI infrastructure, model usage, and the economics of cloud services.
  • Experience partnering with Finance or FP&A on cloud budgeting, forecasting, cost allocation, and business reporting is a plus.
